What to Do If You've Been Scammed in Crypto
Being scammed is distressing, and scammers count on panic. If it's happened to you, here are clear-headed steps that can limit the damage and avoid making it worse.
Act fast to limit further loss
- If a wallet is compromised, move any remaining funds to a new wallet with a fresh seed phrase immediately.
- Revoke token approvals connected to the malicious site.
- Change passwords and enable 2FA on related accounts.
Document everything
- Save transaction hashes, wallet addresses, links, usernames and screenshots.
- Note dates, amounts and how you were contacted.
- This record is essential for any report or trace.
Report it
- Report to your local authorities / cybercrime unit.
- If a centralized exchange is involved, contact them — they may freeze funds that arrive.
- Report scam accounts and links to the relevant platforms.
Avoid the second scam
“Recovery agents” who promise to get your funds back for an upfront fee are almost always a second scam targeting victims. Be extremely wary.
